My name is Karen Winter, I was born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, UK, and I am a mother, first aid teacher & paramedic. I founded First Aid Plus Ltd, an award winning First Aid Training company in 2000.
As a child I had always dreamed one day I would go overseas and help those less fortunate than myself. In 2009 I had saved enough money to make this trip & decided to go to one of the least funded areas in the world, Central America.
As fate would have it, Ros & David, dear friends of mine, were renting a house in Nicaragua at that time, with Ros's sister Kate, who speaks fluent Latino Spanish. So off I went on this venture to see if anyone did need first aid training & if it was possible to teach life saving skills in a country I had never been to?
After one month, having trained over 100 people from all different backgrounds, I returned to the UK and set up the Charity Global First Aid, with the aim of creating projects all over the world, to not just teach first aid training, but to teach people how to teach first aid.
One of the many groups we met were a volunteer fire and ambulance department, who have no money for training or equpment. They asked me to return to teach a selected number of volunteers how to teach first aid, so they can train their hundreds of volunteers as well as people in their community.
You are involved in the next part of this story. It would be wonderful for you to become involved, as a volunteer, a fundraiser, or even just let someone else know about my cause to help me raise funds to return to Nicaragua to run our very first project. Please keep in touch, and see our charity grow :-)
