Nicaraguan Fire Department
Working in the toughest of conditions these volunteers have no money for training
The Volunteer Fire-fighters of Managua (Benemerito Cuerpo de Bomberos) Established in 1936, is a coalition of firefighters & ambulance volunteers who provide emergency services throughout the capital. The organization is not supported by government funding, equipment is severely limited, mostly provided from donated written off vehicles outside Nicaragua. Access to formal training, such as basic first aid, trauma & medical training, is needed.
In 2009 Paramedic Karen Winter travelled to Nicaragua to teach first aid to volunteers of the (Benemerito Cuerpo de Bomberos). To help improve the quality of ambulance & firefighting volunteers & to ensure their own safety, the Benemerito Cuerpo de Bomberos requested the support of GLOBAL FIRST AID to return to provide a “Train the Trainer” programme, enabling a selection of volunteers to be taught how to teach first aid to volunteers, communities, schools businesses etc.
